Battlefield Innovation on Display at FOSE 2007

WASHINGTON - The Federal Office Systems Exposition (FOSE) wrapped up this week and among the
technological innovations on display was a piece of equipment that the military gets a lot of mileage out of in
conflict areas.

It's called the Tactical MXP, and it's made by a company called Tandberg.

It's currently being used in war zones in Iraq and Afghanistan. Because it's a video conferencing system, it gives military forces on the battlefield the ability to share the actual war environment with commanders viewing the conference -- hundreds and even thousands of miles away.

Michael Medina, marketing manager at VSGi, which displayed the device at FOSE, says the system, which looks like a suitcase, "is rugged and adaptable." It comes with a standard dial-pad with a 17-inch video screen and an embedded camera in the case. It can also be configured to accommodate a laptop.

If the military uses a device like this, security has to be a priority.

"The Tactical MXP can be dialed discreetly and securely into a satellite and provide high quality feeds from
remote locations," Medina says.
